Synopsis

The film opens some time after the events of the original film, in which a celebration is being held for Ariel and Eric's newborn daughter Melody on a ship at sea, so that both humans and merpeople can attend. ("Down to the Sea") Ariel's father King Triton, presents baby Melody with a magic locket. The party is interrupted when skinny cecaelia Morgana, sister of the deceased Ursula, arrives and threatens to cause Melody harm, using her as leverage to get Triton's trident. Ariel and Eric work together to foil Morgana's plan.

Deciding that Morgana's presence is a threat, Ariel decides to withhold all knowledge of the sea world from Melody. The locket is tossed into the ocean, and a massive wall is built to separate the royal castle from the beach.

Melody grows up into a young girl in a controlled environment, banned from entering the sea. However, Melody has been sneaking out the castle regularly to swim, and finds her locket. Seeing her name on the locket, Melody confronts her mother in an explosive argument, but a furious Ariel confronts Melody and forbids her to go into the sea. Melody disobeys Ariel and takes a boat and sails away from home, hoping to find answers. Her parents soon learn she is gone, and Triton uses his magic to transform Ariel back into a mermaid to search for Melody.

Meanwhile, Melody is lured to Morgana's lair. Morgana uses the remains of Ursula's magic to transform Melody into a mermaid. ("For a Moment") Morgana explains that the magic is temporary, but she will be able to transform Melody permanently if Morgana were to get hold of the trident, which she claims was "stolen" by Triton, and can be located in Atlantica. Of note, according to the map Morgana gives Melody, Atlantica is located off the coast of Iceland some distance from Scandinavia. Melody decides to get the trident, and during her search meets Tip, a penguin, and Dash, a walrus, who join her. ("Tip and Dash")

Melody is successful in getting the trident, as only people related to King Triton can remove the trident from its place at the royal throne. She returns to Morgana just as Ariel herself has found Morgana's hideout. Melody is shocked to see Ariel as a mermaid, but before Ariel can explain fully the truth of her overprotective actions, Melody gives the trident to Morgana. Morgana kidnaps Ariel, and traps Melody and Flounder in the cave. Melody realises her mistake.

Morgana uses the trident's magic to lord over the ocean, rising to the surface to gloat. Scuttle, Triton, Sebastian, and Eric arrive, and a battle ensues against Morgana and her minions. After escaping from Morgana, Ariel again rescues Eric from being drowned by Cloak and Dagger. After the sun sets, Melody turns back into a human and begins to drown, but Flounder, Tip, and Dash carry her out of the sea. Using the power of the trident, Morgana forces all the merpeople and creatures to bow before her; as Melody is human, she is able to grab the trident from Morgana and throw it to Triton. Triton, uses his trident to encase Morgana in a block of ice, which sinks underwater.

Melody is reunited with her family, and Triton offers his granddaughter the option of becoming a mermaid permanently. Instead, she asks him to use the trident to disintegrate the wall separating her home from the sea. ("Here On The Land And Sea")
